# How Much Compost Medium is Needed
## Get it right from the start—how much coco coir or peat moss you need for smooth, odor-free performance every time.
When it comes to composting toilets, the right amount of compost medium is the difference between clean, efficient performance and a frustrating mess. Whether you're using the **OGO™ ORIGIN** or the **NOMAD by OGO™**, dialing in your compost medium is key to keeping your setup simple, sanitary, and low-maintenance.

For the ORIGIN, the sweet spot is **24 oz. of dry coco coir or sphagnum peat moss**. This amount provides the right depth and density for solids to be effectively mixed by the internal electric agitator.
- **Dry vs. Moist**:
While dry coir gives you more uses between cleanouts, it’s not always ideal on its own.
- **Pros of dry**: Maximizes capacity and helps reduce early saturation.
- **Cons of dry**: Toilet paper breaks down slower, and super-dry coir can produce dust that affects air quality and mixing consistency.
**Our recommendation:** Slightly moisten the coir. Not wet—just enough to reduce dust and help paper break down more evenly. Think damp sponge, not soggy soil.
