How to Install the OGO™ Exterior Shell Vent for Proper Compost Toilet Ventilation

A step-by-step guide for venting your OGO™ ORIGIN through vans, RVs, tiny homes, cabins, and more.

Proper ventilation is a critical part of how the OGO™ ORIGIN works. It’s not just about removing odor—it’s about keeping airflow consistent across the solids bin to reduce moisture, prevent clumping, and support the composting process.

The OGO™ Exterior Shell Vent is designed to make setup easy, clean, and adaptable for different wall types and structures. Whether you’re venting through thin aluminum or thick siding and insulation, this guide shows you how to do it right.

Why Ventilation Matters

Inside every OGO™ ORIGIN is a continuously running 12V fan that helps push humid air from the solids bin out through the vent.

  • Reduces internal moisture buildup

  • Prevents compost from becoming soggy or dense

  • Keeps oxygen moving across the compost mix

  • Supports efficient drying and odor-free operation

This airflow travels across the top of the compost medium and out the shell vent—helping your compost stay light, dry, and biologically active.

Standard Fan vs. High-CFM Upgrade

The standard fan included with every OGO™ ORIGIN is designed to be quiet and energy-efficient:

  • Fan Speed: 3500 RPM (±10%)

  • Power Draw: 0.02A (0.48Ah/day)

  • Noise: Just 14 dBA

  • Airflow: 4.3 CFM

  • Rated Life: 40,000 hours

  • Certifications: CE + RoHS

For most installations—especially in open spaces—this fan provides all the airflow you need without making a sound.

However, in humid climates, tight cabinetry, or closed enclosures (like hidden van drawers or marine setups), you may want more forced airflow to keep moisture moving efficiently.

That’s why we offer a High-CFM Fan Upgrade, which moves more air out of the unit and through the vent—perfect for conditions where ventilation needs a little extra help.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • 1-5/8" hole saw

  • Drill + drill bits

  • 1-1/4" PVC pipe (for thick-wall installs)

  • Marker or pencil

  • Screwdriver or socket wrench

  • Mounting hardware (included)

Shell Vent Orientation

Always install the vent with the open end facing downward, ideally at a 45° angle toward the ground. This prevents wind interference, water intrusion, and backdraft.

Installing in Thin-Walled Structures

(Vans, RVs, trailers, campers, etc.)

  1. Cut a 1-5/8” hole in the wall where you want the exterior shell vent.

  2. Remove the vent cover by unscrewing the two internal screws.

  3. Place the back plate on the outside and the white hose flange on the inside.

  4. Mark and drill the four mounting holes.

  5. Bolt the pieces together—do not use the long included screws for thin walls. For the cleanest look, insert bolts from the inside out.

  6. Reattach the vent cover.

  7. Attach your ventilation hose to the inner hose flange.

✔️ Done. Clean airflow, secure fit, ready to go.

Installing in Thick-Walled Structures

(Tiny homes, cabins, buildings with insulation, etc.)

  1. Cut a 1-5/8” hole for a 1-1/4” PVC pipe.

  2. Remove the shell vent cover.

  3. Mount the back plate to the exterior wall using the included long screws.

  4. Push a cut length of 1-1/4” PVC through the wall, extending 1–2 inches inside.

  5. Seat the pipe into the recess on the vent’s back plate.

  6. Reattach the cover.

  7. Connect your hose to the inner end of the PVC pipe.

✔️ Your system is now fully vented, dry, and ready for use.

Final Word

The OGO™ Exterior Shell Vent is simple to install—but critical to performance. Paired with the built-in fan, it ensures your compost stays dry, your system stays odor-free, and your airflow stays consistent.
