Whether you're off-grid, on the road, or somewhere in between, knowing how to dispose of your compost toilet waste properly makes all the difference.
When to Empty Your Solids
OGO™ ORIGIN
-
The motor may begin to labor or slow slightly as the compost thickens—this is your cue it’s time to empty.
-
For most users, that’s around 25–30 uses depending on moisture and medium used.
NOMAD by OGO™
-
The compostable bag inside the bin will fill gradually.
-
We recommend a layering method:
Dry medium → waste → more dry medium -
This helps neutralize odor, absorb moisture, and extend use.
How to Bag and Dump Waste While Traveling
You don’t need a compost pile or disposal site to handle your solids responsibly. Here’s how to manage it cleanly on the go:
1. Use Compostable Bags
When dumping the solids bin from the OGO™ ORIGIN Compost Toilet System, use a 4-6 gallon compostable plastic bag. If none available recycle plastic bags work well too. For the NOMAD by OGO™ Compost Toilet system we suggest a 8-10 gallon trash bag to ensure proper handling. Do what works for you. Be safe. Follow good hygiene, wear gloves while handling compost waste mixture.
2. Tie It Off
Once full, remove the bag and tie it securely.
OGO™ systems keep solids dry—so you won’t be dealing with sloshy messes.
3. Trash It or Compost It
-
You can safely place the tied bag in any standard trash bin. The contents will continue to break down inside the bag.
-
If you’re stationary or heading to a compost-friendly destination, drop the bag into your compost pile and cover with dry materials.
Tropical or Humid Conditions
Problem: Medium becomes too wet or breaks down prematurely
Solution:
-
Include a drier medium like peat moss to the mixture
-
Add extra medium after each use
-
Dump more frequently to prevent compaction
Overloaded Bag or Resistance
Problem (ORIGIN): Motor slows or agitator seems strained
Solution:
-
Empty the bin as soon as this happens
-
Avoid overly moist mediums
-
Add medium before and after use to improve consistency
