How Do You Empty a Compost Toilet

Emptying a compost toilet sounds like a big job—but with the right system, it's clean, quick, and surprisingly simple.

Whether you're living full-time off-grid or just taking weekend trips, how you manage waste can define the comfort and longevity of your setup. At OGO™, we believe in making the dirty work cleaner, smarter, and less complicated.

Here’s what it actually looks like to empty our two systems: the OGO™ ORIGIN Compost Toilet and the NOMAD by OGO™.

OGO™ ORIGIN: Built for Full-Time, Long-Term Use

The OGO™ ORIGIN is designed for consistent performance in real-world, high-use conditions. That includes user-friendly emptying that doesn’t disrupt your day—or your space.

Urine Bottle

  • Capacity: 2.4 gallons

  • How Often: Typically emptied every 2–3 days for two users

  • Process:

    1. Pull out the front-access bottle.

    2. Pour contents into any approved waste disposal station or greywater-compatible system.

    3. Rinse with water or diluted vinegar. Optional: Add a splash of vinegar to reduce scaling and odor.

Solids Bin

  • Capacity: 25–30 uses before emptying

  • How Often: Every 2–4 weeks depending on use

  • Process:

    1. Flip open the top housing.

    2. Lift out the internal solids bin.

    3. Dispose of waste in a composting site, landfill (in a compostable bag), or other approved disposal.

    4. Add fresh compost medium (coco coir or peat moss) and reassemble.

The push-button electric agitator ensures even mixing, reducing odor and making emptying less unpleasant. No cranks. No mess.

NOMAD by OGO™: Simple, Portable, No Power Needed

The NOMAD is a compact, non-electric compost toilet designed for light travel and quick setups. It’s straightforward by design—and just as easy to empty.

Urine Bottle

  • Capacity: 1.2 gallons

  • How Often: Every 1–2 days for solo use

  • Process:

    1. Slide the urine bottle out from under the seat.

    2. Empty and rinse—same as the ORIGIN.

Solids Bag

  • Capacity: 5–6 uses

  • How Often: After a weekend or short trip

  • Process:

    1. Lift the seat and remove the solids container.

    2. Dispose of the bag (any standard compostable liner works).

    3. Line the container with a new bag and reapply a base layer of compost medium.

No mixing, no moving parts. Just layer and go. The tension-fit bag clips hold everything securely, even in motion.

So... How Hard Is It Really?

It’s not hard. In fact, many users say switching to a compost toilet system is one of the smartest upgrades they’ve made. No black tanks. No chemicals. No more campground dump stations.

And when your system is designed with usability in mind, like both the OGO™ ORIGIN and NOMAD, the “gross factor” is virtually eliminated.

Choose the System That Matches Your Life

  • Full-Time, Multi-Person, Off-Grid Use → Go with the OGO™ ORIGIN
Clean design, powered mixing, high capacity, smart features.

  • Short Trips, Solo Travel, Emergency Kits → The NOMAD by OGO™
